The budgerigar, also known as the budgie or parakeet, has been kept as a pet in captivity since the 1800s. Wild budgies can still be found in Australia, where they live in large flocks and feed almost exclusively off grass seeds. In captivity, many people feed their budgies a similar seed based diet, but the high fat content of seeds coupled with a lack of exercise can lead to a host of medical problems.
The best solution for a healthy budgie lies in a varied and balanced diet plan. Offering a wide array of foods, including seeds, vegetables and pellets, will produce the healthiest possible bird.
People Food for Budgerigars
There are a wide variety of people foods that are suitable for budgies. Whole wheat pastas, without any type of sauce, and whole wheat breads are an excellent treat. Shredded vegetables are also a great addition to a budgie's diet. Potatoes and rice can also be added to a budgie's diet for variety.
Pellet Food for Budgerigars
When purchasing a pellet food for a budgie, it is important to chose a brand that is specifically designed for a budgerigar. Different birds have different dietary needs, and so pelleted foods are balanced differently depending on the species that it was designed for. Unlike many other species of pet bird, which require a mainly pellet diet, the budgie should be fed a 50/50 diet of pellet and seeds.
Seeds for the Budgerigar
Budgies need seeds in their diet, but they must be the right kind of seeds. Mostly, captive budgies feed on millet and other small seeds. They should not be given a seed mixture meant for a larger bird. There are also seed treats on the market that can be given to a budgie, making them work a little bit to free the seeds before eating them.
Another form that seeds can take in a budgie's diet is the seed sprout. Seed sprouts are a very healthy snack for most birds. Sprouts offer a nutrient rich alternative to standard seeds. Seeds can be sprouted at home or sprouts purchased at most grocery stores. To sprout at home, simply place seeds in a small container, without soil, and water daily.
The best diet for a pet budgie is a varied diet. Pellet, seeds, vegetables and grains make up a balanced diet for a healthy pet bird. Of course, like with any pet, a healthy diet is not enough. Budgies must still get plenty of exercise to maintain a healthy body weight. For more tips about the perfect balance of foods and exercise, talk to an avian veterinarian.
